It may seem a bit silly to ask an orthodontist this, but it happens all the time, people who are thinking about getting Invisalign have often done a ton of research beforehand. Eventually they come across this idea that maybe their Invisalign could help them lose some weight. It’s worth talking about it because the answer isn’t a simple yes or no. We want to give you a straight-up, honest answer to the question, do you lose weight with Invisalign in Parkland, without any of the over-the-top stuff. We want to give you the lowdown. Early orthodontic treatment identifies bite or spacing issues before they become more complex. By starting early, we can guide jaw growth and create space for permanent teeth. Early treatment promotes a healthy, balanced smile that lasts.
The short answer is that some people do notice they’ve lost a little bit of weight after starting Invisalign, although this is no guarantee and it definitely wasn’t the goal of the treatment to help you shed a few pounds. What does happen, though, is that taking your trays out before you eat, brushing your teeth afterwards and then putting them back in again can actually help break the habit of mindless nibbling. A lot of people find that they nibble less because it’s just easier to do when you’re not messing around with your trays all the time. And for some people, not eating between meals here and there can add up over the course of time. Another thing that happens, people with Invisalign tend to drink more water throughout the day and reach less for sugary drinks because they have to take their trays out to drink anything other than plain water. For some people that switch to mainly water can have a tiny impact on their overall calorie intake, but how big of an impact varies from one person to the next. Adult orthodontic treatment helps improve both oral health and appearance with subtle solutions like Invisalign and clear braces. Many adults choose treatment to gain confidence and a healthier smile that fits their lifestyle.
At Marrecau Orthodontics we always try to be as upfront with our patients as we can about what Invisalign can really do. Invisalign is a type of orthodontic treatment that’s all about getting your teeth looking straight and nice. Any changes to your eating habits or weight that come with wearing the trays are basically just a happy side effect, not something we had any intention of helping you with. We’d never suggest that you use Invisalign as a way to lose weight, and we think it’s really important to get that out in the open from the start. What we do see is that a lot of our patients become way more mindful of how they take care of their teeth and gums once treatment starts. Keeping your teeth and gums clean is a good habit to get into in the first place, and a lot of people just keep doing it even after their treatment is all done. We love to see that.
And don’t forget, some patients might feel a bit weird during the first little bit of treatment while their mouth gets used to wearing the trays. Chewing can feel a bit off, and for some people that does mean eating a bit less for a little while. But that usually wears off really fast as you get used to your trays, and for most people it doesn’t make any real difference in the long run.
