Many people think that clear and Invisalign are the same at first since both offer more aesthetic options than traditional metal braces. This is what we find when patients ask us about the differences between the two. Both can work well to straighten teeth but they do so in very different ways and are better for different kinds of patients and orthodontic cases.
Clear braces, also known as transparent braces, work like regular braces but they use the same technology to straighten teeth. Early Treatment helps guide jaw development and correct alignment concerns before they worsen. Starting Early Treatment can often reduce the need for more complex procedures later on.
Invisalign on the other hand works completely different. You will wear a series of clear removable aligners that will move your teeth into place as part of this treatment. You will wear each aligner for about 2 weeks before switching to the next one. The aligners are made of a transparent plastic that is almost invisible when you wear them. One of the biggest differences between these treatments, according to Marrecau Orthodontics, is how they handle complex orthodontic cases. Clear braces can fix almost any orthodontic condition, like severe crowding, major bite problems and complex tooth rotations. The brackets and wires let us move teeth exactly where we want them to go, which lets us address cases that would be hard to do with aligners alone.
Invisalign has gotten a lot better over the years and can now fix a lot of problems that used to only be achievable with braces. But some complex cases still benefit from the constant pressure and exact control that clear braces give. We look at each case separately to see which treatment will work best.
The daily experience of these treatments is very different. Clear braces are fixed in place, so they work all the time without you having to do anything. They are always applying the right amount of pressure on your teeth to move them because you can’t take them off. This is good for patients who might forget to wear their removable aligners every day.
You have to wear Invisalign aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day for them to work, but you can take them out to eat, drink and brush your teeth. Being able to take it out is a big plus for your lifestyle because you can eat whatever you want and keep up with your normal dental hygiene routine. You have to stay away from some foods when wearing clear braces to keep the brackets from breaking and you have to clean your teeth in a special way to keep them clean around the hardware.
The two treatments are different in how comfortable they are. When you first get clear braces, they may irritate your cheeks and lips until you get used to having brackets in your mouth. Most of the time, Invisalign aligners don’t hurt much but you can feel some pressure when you switch to new ones.
The maintenance needs are also very different. Patients with clear braces need to be careful while cleaning around the brackets and wires and stay away from foods that could damage or stain the ceramic brackets. You need to clean your Invisalign aligners often and store them correctly when you take them off but overall it’s much easier to keep your mouth clean. For Parkland patients who are concerned about how they look during treatment, both options are better than metal braces. Clear braces are less noticeable than metal brackets and Invisalign aligners are almost invisible. Your individual orthodontic needs, lifestyle and ability to follow treatment instructions will often determine your choice.
Cost and treatment time are usually the same for both options but this can vary depending on the case. Dr. Tomas Marrecau brings a strong academic background and a genuinely patient-focused approach to orthodontic care. After studying molecular biology at Princeton and completing dental school at Tufts, he finished his orthodontic residency at the University of Pennsylvania, gaining advanced training in modern treatment techniques. At his Parkland practice, he focuses on individualized care, creating treatment plans that fit each patient’s needs and long-term goals. Outside the office, he stays active through tennis, golf, and travel, keeping the same easygoing energy he brings to his work.
