Many patients ask us if they can just wear their Invisalign aligners at night. Those who are worried about how they will look during the day or how annoying it will be to wear them all the time ask this question. We get it, we understand those worries but the answer isn’t as simple as many patients would like it to be.
Patients who get traditional Invisalign treatment have to wear their aligners for 20-22 hours a day. 20-22 hours a day. That’s a long time. This long wear time is necessary because teeth need soft, steady pressure to move. Taking off aligners for a long time can cause the teeth to move back to where they were before and that slows down or stops the progress made during treatment.
But there are times when wearing them only at night might be the best option. We at Marrecau Orthodontics often recommend this method for those who only need to reposition your text. We at Marreca at times recommend this method for those who only need to reposition your teeth a little bit or for those who only need to reposition your teeth. We also see patients who have finished their first treatment but need to keep their teeth in place for a longer time to prevent them from getting worse.
Most patients who start orthodontic treatment won’t be able to move their teeth enough if they just wear aligners at night. 8 hours of wear time which is about how long most people sleep is not enough for the biological mechanisms that shift teeth. It takes a lot longer for the bone and tissue around the teeth to change shape because of the constant pressure.
Invisalign Express or Invisalign Lite is a particular product that is meant for small adjustments and may work with less wear time in some cases. These treatments only allow for very small tooth movements so they may only be good for those who don’t have a lot of crowding or spacing concerns. But even with these shorter treatments we usually still recommend that you wear the aligners for more than just sleeping hours. Early Treatment helps guide jaw development and correct alignment concerns before they worsen. Starting Early Treatment can often reduce the need for more complex procedures later on.
We also think about patients who have already finished their active treatment phase and wear them exclusively at night. Patients need to wear retainers after their teeth have moved to keep them in their new places. As part of their long term maintenance plan some patients switch to wearing their last aligners or special retainers just at night.
The effectiveness of wearing just at night is largely determined on the unique orthodontic requirements of each patient. We look at things like how bad the misalignment is, how old the patient is, how well their teeth respond to movement and how committed they are to using the aligners at the right times.
We often talk to Parkland patients who are worried about wearing aligners during the day. After a few days of wearing them some patients say that the aligners become less noticeable. Some people like that Invisalign aligners are less noticeable than regular braces so it’s easier for them to wear them in public or at work.
We always stress how important it is to stick to the recommended wear schedule for the best results. Patients who don’t wear their aligners for the prescribed amount of time often have to wear them for longer, get less predictable results or need more aligners to finish their treatment.
If you’re thinking of getting Invisalign but worried about wearing it during the day we recommend you talk to us during a consultation.
