Many people getting Invisalign treatment want to know if they can use whitening strips to whiten their teeth while they are in treatment. We get asked this question a lot and we understand why they want to know if they can combine the two. It’s normal to want both straighter and whiter teeth but there are some things to consider before using whitening products while wearing aligners.

The short answer is no, you shouldn’t use whitening strips while wearing Invisalign aligners. The biggest problem is that whitening strips can’t get to all parts of your teeth evenly when you wear aligners. Putting whitening strips on top of your Invisalign aligners wouldn’t work because they cover your teeth almost entirely. And putting them under would make the strips fit and uncomfortable.
We tell our patients at Marreco Orthodontics that timing is everything when it comes to whitening. Attachments are little tooth coloured bumps that help the aligners grasp your teeth better. They won’t whiten at the same rate as the rest of your teeth. This will be noticeable when the attachments are removed at the end of treatment. Early Treatment helps guide jaw development and correct alignment concerns before they worsen. Starting Early Treatment can often reduce the need for more complex procedures later on.

Another thing to consider is that your teeth will move during Invisalign treatment. As time goes on, the way your teeth fit together changes, so any whitening done during treatment may not work the same on all your teeth. Parts that were hidden or in the shade during one part of the treatment will show up more later which could be uneven.

We also worry that using whitening treatments with braces could cause irritation. Aligners put light pressure on your teeth and gums to move them which may have already made them a little sensitive. Putting whitening products in this condition could make your teeth more sensitive and produce pain that slows down your orthodontic progress.

But this doesn’t mean you can’t get whiter teeth when you’re getting braces. Many people in Parkland want to know how to whiten their teeth while they are getting Invisalign. We sometimes recommend professional whitening treatments that can be done at the right time with certain parts of the treatment but this needs careful planning and professional supervision.

Some people decide to wait until their Invisalign treatment is over before starting any whitening methods. This way all parts of your teeth can be reached for even whitening and your final tooth positions will be consistent. Many patients say their teeth are easier to clean and look brighter once they are properly aligned. This is because their oral hygiene is better and they reflect light better.

If you’re concerned about the colour of your teeth while you’re in treatment, please talk to us about it during your regular appointments. We can assess your situation and recommend the best time for any whitening methods you want to try.

There are also gentle whitening toothpastes that are okay to use while wearing Invisalign. However these take longer to show effects than professional treatments or whitening strips. These products can help keep your teeth the same colour and get rid of surface stains without getting in the way of your orthodontic treatment.

The best thing to do is to finish your Invisalign treatment first and then look into whitening solutions. This way both treatments will work as best as possible and prevent any problems that could happen if the two are done together.
